The nonprofit conference is devoted to education, research, and information in tourism and hospitality, and is held in cooperation by industry-leading entities in tourism, hospitality, aviation, information technology, vocational development, and education. The symposium explores changing business and training models necessitated by new technologies and recent current events.

The objectives of the forum are to provide an opportunity for tourism educators and trainers to gain new insight about the rapidly changing tourism and hospitality industry, to learn about new training and assessment methods, and to network with their peers. Presenters discss such issues as new advances in airline, tourism, and hospitality technology; teaching and assessment methodologies; and global issues including sustainability, environmental, social and cultural inpacts.

The forum originated in 1984 in response to demand for the interchange of information, ideas, and technologies among universities, colleges, airlines, and governments involved in tourism education and development. Held annually in Australia and New Zealand since 1990, the conference has become one of the most important events in tourism education in the Pacific region.
